Today’s on page SEO review gives some great hints and tips which will see your website on the front page in a matter of days.

On Page SEO – My Top Tips

  • First and for-most – keyword research. Use the ‘Google adwords keyword tool‘ provided free of charge by Google. This is a great little tool which will show you exactly the amount of people searching for specific keywords. You will need to judge the amount of searches to the amount of other websites competing for that same keyword; highly competitive keywords will have thousands if not millions of others all competing for the same thing. If you’re a large powerful site then fine you can compete. If you are just getting started then the lower competition the better, anything below 500,000 is a good place to start otherwise be prepared to be spending years on page 500.
  • Next is keyword density. For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about I mean the amount of times the keyword is used throughout your post/article/website. On average you should be aiming for about 3-6%. Experts advise incorporating it into your first and last sentence also helps. Some people over do it and have their primary keyword in practically every sentence, this is not necessarily going to make any positive difference, if anything Google may even see it as spam and not rank you at all.
  • Integrating your primary keyword into your URL is a must. This is a very important step as this rates highly in the search engine’s optimization search for e.g. check the URL for this article, if your reading this from my blog you will see it is http://www.AskJayHastings.com/Marketing-Strategies/On-Page-SEO my keyword is ‘on page SEO
  • It is also important to include the keyword in your title and also page description.
  • Incorporating your H1, H2, H3 header tags is also useful. When using this in a word press blog it is located in the format drop down box. If you are not already on my blog go to it now and you will see some big bold headings which all includes my ‘on page SEO’ keyword. This is what your header tags are and just helps the search engine find you when crawling the net
  • Adding pictures to your posts and articles also helps. When entering your pictures there will be a space to enter the URL, this should be apparent with most blogs and websites especially word press
  • Install the ‘redirection’ plugin helps to not duplicate your content and avoids you missing out on back links. your website appears in the search engines in 2 ways, one way is http://www.YourWebsite.com and the other http://YourWebsite.com (without www) if you do not use this plugin to define where the search engines look then it may find duplicated content thus will not rank your website (Google does not like duplicate content).
  • Utilising ‘no follow’ tags also help. You do not want your website linking to some sites; some sites do not perform well in the eyes of Google which then ultimately effects your ranking.
  • Finally, if you’re running a site on Word Press, you’ll be able to use a plugin for generating a sitemap. I use the Google XML Sitemap plugin. Install it, generate your sitemap and add it to the footer of your website. It’s good for internal SEO and allows the search engines to better index your website.
